Wow! First of all, it is important not to understate just how moody this stuff is; it really is quite a mind-blowing collection of atmospheric instrumentals and idiosyncratic, downtempo beats. Definitely one to be listened to in the dark, this is a psychedelic journey through oddball instruments, sinister cadences, mellow grooves, and haunting sounds. Listening to this album is quite a pensive experience; there are gloomy, foreboding moments, there are unsettling moments – but there are also moments that are delicate and, dare I say, pretty. Think of sensual, balmy nights of subdued contemplation, and you’re part of the way there. This is really the sort of album you might put on quietly in the background while you’re doing the washing up, only to find moments later that you have been totally absorbed into this strange world, full of ominous noises and intriguing incidentals. Essential.
Eugene Harrington comes from Hawthorne California where his father owned a keyboard repair shop. At a young age Eugene would deliver parts and do repairs for studios in and around the area. Eugene loved going to the studios and watching the musicians and engineers work on there projects. He became very familiar with electric keyboards and started experimenting with sounds and recording techniques. He soon moved into the back of his fathers shop and recorded the album the Life of Eugene Harrington. It is a collection of recordings influenced by psychedelic breaks and grooves.
