Lilea Narrative : Feline Boulevard EP
UK : Bax Records

The albums 'Nouvelle Chair' and 'Echantillodrome' established Lilea Narrative as a mainstay of electro hip hop in France. Lilea Narrative now hammers it home with new EP 'Feline Boulevard'. Blockbass's musical scratching, still in place, gives dynamics to the effective rhythmic constructions interrupted by groovy breaks and cuts.

Prince Fatty Meets The Mutant Hifi : Transistor Cowboy/Son Of A Thousand Fathers
UK : Mr Bongo
7" =
£5.99
In Stock
Prince Fatty Meets The Mutant Hifi in 'Return of Gringo!' is the fevered and frontal lobe-damaged brainchild of Nick Coplowe (The Mutant Hifi) and Mike Pelanconi (Prince Fatty), the result of years of plotting, planning, laughing and procrastinating. Put simply, it is a surf/ska/spaghetti western soundtrack album for a film that is yet to be made. Think Dick Dale jamming with the Skatalites with Morricone at the helm, including appearances from Alessandro Alessandroni (the original spaghetti western whistler) and you're in the right section at the record store, although it is possibly a very small section.

Carl “Sherlock” Holmes started gigging in the early sixties forming Carl Holmes & the Commanders with whom he recorded a full length album for Atlantic in 1962 entitled 'Twist Party At The Roundtable'. Later on he recorded a couple of 45’s for the Parkway and Verve labels. After a final 45 for the local Philly label Black Jack, the group disbanded and Carl formed the Sherlock Holmes Investigation a solid outfit backed by a strong rhythm section packed with congas, vibes, flute, organ and sax. Philly’s Sigma Sound Studio was the place they recorded their sole album and Curtis R. Staten’s CRS Records was the label that released it. These two tunes are available on 45RPM single for the very first time.

CD =

In ‘60s Europe a distinctive, European jazz sound began to develop that combined traditional music from across Europe and around the world with the creative freedom so abundant in American jazz. Over time the most forward-thinking creative talents of the post-Coltrane European jazz generation crafted and nurtured sophisticated and multi-faceted styles of jazz that were as radical as they were beautiful, giving modern jazz a characteristically European flavour. This double LP is a heady mix of stirring jazz overtures with orchestra and choir, modal montages inspired by pilgrimages to Asia and Africa, experiments in rhythm and sound where modern jazz meets traditional Balkan and Flamenco folk music. This is Spiritual Jazz – European style.

Blue Rhythm Combo : BRC's Groove
UK : Jazzman
7 Inch Boxset =
£14.99

The Blue Rhythm Combo from Barbados produced some of the heaviest funk records to come out of the Caribbean in the early ‘70s – crossing the local Spouge rhythm with a heavy dose of American styled funk and soul. This 7" triple pack brings together six of their heaviest tracks from the early to mid-‘70s, culled from their releases on the famed Merrydisc label and a later single on WIRL that showcases their later and more soulful sound. Complete with liner notes telling the story of the band and some unseen pics, this is as close to Caribbean funk as you’ll get without catching the plane and going there yourself. Highly recommended!

Music is from The Funk Brothers, the song by the legendary Richard "Popcorn" Wylie and the exquisite femme backing vocals come from The Charmaines. The Webs track has been steadily building up a rep as a top dancer at "Not The Northern Soul Top 500" venues over the last 5 years. It is written and produced by Bateman - Courtney and demonstrates how on top of the game they were when it came to making great Soulful dance records!

LaVern Baker was one of the ruling queens of Rhythm & Blues through the ’50s, a singer who had a knockout voice, oodles of charm and plenty of feminine sass to spare. ‘Love Me Right’ is just about the perfect record for the dance floor. Slightly uptempo for most popcorn nights, this is a driving, swinging R&B number with incredible riffs and an irresistible vocal turn. ‘Tiny Tim’ on the flip needs little pitch adjustment, this one is slow and decidedly slinky as LaVern is joined by the barritone-voiced Jimmy Ricks for a brazenly suggestive duet where the pair discuss who’s wearing the trousers, so to speak. Highly recommended!
