The time: 1980. The place: New York City. While clubs in the Bronx and Brooklyn were still emerging from their post-disco hangovers, a new sound was beginning to take its place: Hip Hop. Spyder D's "Big Apple Rappin'," released on Newtroit Records, epitomized the style of this new generation, featuring a simple yet instantly memorable and danceable groove paired with Spyder's slick raps dedicated to his hometown and delivered with distinctly New York attitude. Reissued in a fully licensed fresh pressing, this iconic 12" captures the Hip Hop movement in its nascent days: fun, fresh and ready to party.

On the flip another classic and one of the most famous horn riffs in hip hop. Sampling Freda Payne drums this was one of the first tracks to take hip hop out of the drum machine era into the sampling age. Guaranteed to rock a party every time!

On the flipside more legends, this time DJ Cash Money and MC Marvellous got together for an album back in the mid 80's and this was the stand out track. Uptempo funky drums, dope scratching and party lyrics. Start doing the running man!

WOAH! A double sided drum machine wonder! On the A side “"It's Yours" by T La Rock and Jazzy Jay is a landmark hip hop classic from 1984. "It's Yours" was the first song ever produced by Rick Rubin and his fledgling Def Jam production company. The song was the first single to feature a Def Jam Recordings logo, but it was later released through producer Arthur Baker's independent label Party Time, which was the hip hop division of his dance music label Streetwise Records. Now in 2010 its been re-issuedon a replica 7” with the original Party Time label artwork.
On the flip we’ve got the classic Dimples D “Sucker DJ’s” a very early Marley Marl production. It was originally released on the Party Time label in 1983, one year before Marley Marl's breakthrough on Roxanne Shanté's "Roxanne's Revenge". Sucker DJ’s is one of the finest ever female rap tracks in history, outshining even the finest works of MC Lyte and more seriously Roxanne Shante, this 1983 classic is brutally efficient and blows up time after time in a club with the boomin' system.

On the flip Sweety G gets busy exhorting the crowd over a midtempo disco break, coining one of the most used phrases in hip hop. Proper old school rap!

DONT SLEEP ON THIS! ALOT OF PEOPLE MISSED THIS FIRST TIME ROUND! Hot of the success of Jay-Z’s Reasonable Doubt, producer extraordinaire Ski was on fire when he flipped Dynasty’s “Adventures In The Land of Music” for Camp Lo’s breakout 1996 smash single “Luchini aka This Is It”. The same year saw Camp Lo opening shows for De La Soul during their Stakes is High tour. Combine that with the fact that Ish aka Butterfly from Digable Planets had cosigned for the group’s reputation and would
appear on of the tracks (in addition to Trugoy from De La), there became a huge buzz around their debut album Uptown Saturday Night.

One of the best Nervous Records releases ever. This was rocking every dancefloor back in 1993 before Flex's Hot 97 show started getting more and more commercial. 1989's Straight Outta Compton, by Dre's previous outfit N.W.A, may have shined the public spotlight on the genre, but The Chronic legitimised it. That is not to say that Snoop Doggy Dogg (The Chronic marks his debut) and Dre's raps are for everyone; the subject matter is the sex, drugs, violence, and politics of South Central Los Angeles, and the phrasing is explicit, to say the least. But The Chronic's real genius is the music. By breeding hip-hop, jazz (studio instrumentation includes saxophones and flutes), funk, and soul (sampled artists include Parliament, Donny Hathaway, and Isaac Hayes), Dre creates downright intoxicating grooves. If you can't feel The Chronic pulsating through your veins, maybe your heart's not pumping.

One of the cornerstones of the New York hardcore movement, The Infamous is Mobb Deep's masterpiece, a relentlessly bleak song cycle that's been hailed by hardcore rap fans as one of the most realistic gangsta albums ever recorded. Given Mobb Deep's youthful age and art-school background, it's highly unlikely that The Infamous is drawn strictly from real-life experience, yet it's utterly convincing, because it has all the foreboding atmosphere and thematic sweep of an epic crime drama. That's partly because of the cinematic vision behind the duo's detailed narratives, but it's also a tribute to how well the raw, grimy production evokes the world that Mobb Deep is depicting. The group produced the vast majority of the album itself, with help on a few tracks from the Abstract (better known as Q-Tip), and establishes a spare, throbbing, no-frills style indebted to the Wu-Tang Clan.
