Feva was really where Fat City originates from. A weekly wednesday night set up by Mark Rae and Ross Clarke (who dj'ed under the name First Priority) at The Man Alive in Manchester in 1988. Later moved to The State (the site of the legendary Twisted Wheel club), where the resident house band included Tom Findlay (now of Groove Armada), Raj(now records as Laj and Quakerman) and Roger Whickham (now performs with Rae and Christian and Bamboo Soul)
Home Cookin (1993) A monthly thursday at Manchester's newly established Home nightclub. Residents were First Priority, Matt Triggs, Chubby Grooves and Dave Walker and guests included Tim Westwood, Rampage, Ashley Beedle, Boogie Bunch...
Headfunk (1996) A weekly friday at Manchester's Time nightclub. residents were Mark Rae, Mr Scruff, Tom Findlay (now Groove Armada), Chubby Grooves and Matt Triggs.
Frying the Fat. An irregular event at Manchester's Hacienda. One of the most successful non-house nights at the Hacienda. Guests included Nightmares on Wax, LTJ Bukem, Kemistry and Storm, Afrika Bambaataa and the first UK appearance by Grandmaster Flash for 10 years.
Counter Culture. The first joint club collaboration between Fat City and Grand Central started in February 1998 at the tiny intimate Night and Day cafe. In the subsequent 3 years it expanded first to The Music Box and then to Planet K. Guests who played in that time included Phil Asher, Patrick Forge, DJ Spinna, Afu Ra, Groove Armada, Scratch Perverts, the Aboriginals, Q ball and Curt Cazal, Gilles Peterson, Mr Scruff, Norman Jay, Roots Manuva, UFO...
and the present day....
Friends and Family is a joint club promotion between Grand Central and Fat City. Friends and Family has established itself as club where the spirit of the night is all in the name. DJ's and artists that play at our nights are either from the Fat City and Grand Central family or are friends that we invite to play. Consequently, at Friends and Family the music is all important and we aim to distance itself from those club nights where the headline DJ is all important, where DJ fees and door prices are extortionate, where the dj's play it safe and where consequently there is no atmosphere.
